Our top 5 list of popular songs that either have the word dog in the title or are about dogs. As we were doing our research for this topic, we were surprised at how little songs there are about dogs. With more than 50% of homes in North America having at least one dog we thought there would be plenty of songs to choose from, but it doesn't seem to be a popular topic for song writers.

However, we were still able to compile a list of 5 popular songs from multiple genres and decides including, 70s folk/country, 2000's HipHop, 50's classic rock, early 50's popular novelty song, and a 70's teen idol plus a couple of 70's hard rock honourable mentions. Some of these are going to be a fun walk down memory lane. Can you guess any of them from the hits. Let us know your favourite.

5. Patti Page - How Much Is That Doggie In the Window?

Recorded in 1952 by Patti Page and released in 1953. The song was written by Bob Merrill in 1952. It reached no. 1 on the Billboard hot 100 and sold over 2 million copies. It's a catchy pop tune that was also recorded by Lita Roza.

"The original song asks the question: 'How much is that doggie in the window?' Today, the answer is 'too much.' And I don't just mean the price tag on the puppies in pet stores. The real cost is in the suffering of the mother dogs back at the puppy mill. That's where most pet store puppies come from. And that kind of cruelty is too high a price to pay."

Patti re-recorded this song in 2009 but used alternate lyrics and called it "Do You See That Doggie In The Shelter".

Patti loved animals and Upon Page's death in 2013, the Humane Society wrote in its online eulogy, "We remember her fondly for her compassion for animals."

We've included this song to help people become aware that puppies should be obtained from reputable breeders and not puppy mills.

4. Donny Osmond - Puppy Love

OK, OK, ya, we could have pick the Paul Anka version also. We literally flipped a coin. Both were huge hits. Anka wrote and recorded the song in 1960 while he was having an affair with Annette Funicello. The affair didn't last but the song sure did.

The Anka version hit No. 2 on the billboard hot 100 in 1960. The Osmond version hit No. 3 on the Bill board Hot 100 12 years later. This song catapulted Donny into superstardom and he was on the cover of many teen magazines. It launched his career and was responsible for making him a teen idol! 3. Baha Men - Who Let The Dogs Out

The Baha Men recorded this in 2000 and it became an instant hit. In the 2000s you couldn't go to a hockey game, baseball game or any sporting event without hearing this song. The Baha men formed in 1977 and were a huge hit in Bahamas for many years. Their break through hit Who Let The Dogs Out is a cover song from Fat Jakk and his Brand Of Pets.

The song was a huge hit in Europe reaching the top 5 in many European countries. However it only peaked at 40 on the Billboard top 100 in the United States.

In 2007 Rolling Stone Magazine ran a poll for the top 20 most annoying songs ever. Who Let The Dogs Out by the Baha Men ranked 3rd on that list.

Although not as popular today, you will still hear it at sporting events once in a while.

2. Lobo - Me and You and A Dog Named Boo

This song was released in 1971 and written and sun by Lobo (Kent LaVoie). An easy listening folky/country AM staple of the time with some catchy hooks an very melodic melody. The song talks about about a man and his girl friend and their dog (named Boo) traveling across the US, being care free.

The song reached number 5 on the Billboard top 100 in the US and number 1 on the Easy Listening charts were it remained for two weeks. It also did well internationally hitting number 4 in the United Kingdom and number 1 in New Zealand.

This is one of those songs we like to throw on for cocktail hour. Most of the older guests dig this tune as it beings back memories from the early 70s and works well for younger crowds too.

We do believe that if the pandemic lasts any longer, we will all have hair like Lobo!

1. Elvis Presley - Hound Dog

Hound dog is a bluesy rock song written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller in 1952. I twas first recorded by Big Mama Thronton the same year in a blues style. It spent 5 weeks on the R&B charts and sold over 500,000 copies. This song has been recorded more than 250 times and was voted one of the top 500 songs that shaped Rock & Roll.and it hits number 19 on Rolling Stone's list of greatest songs of all time.

Elvis recorded it in 1956 and is one of the best selling singles of all time with more than 10 million copies sold. It was simultaneously number one on the US pop, country, and R&B charts in 1956, and it topped the pop chart for 11 weeks — a record that stood for 36 years.

The song has been feature in countless movies including: Grease, Forest Gump, Lilo & Stitch, A Few Good Men and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Chrystal Skulls.
